Class of 2024 honored at UAF's 102nd commencement ceremony

The University of Alaska Fairbanks honored the Class of 2024 during its 102nd commencement ceremony on Saturday, May 4, at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. The university's first commencement took place in 1923, when the sole graduate, John Sexton Shanly, received a bachelor's degree in agriculture. This year, UAF conferred approximately 1,156 degrees on 1,031 students. Some students received more than one degree. The commencement ceremony included graduates from summer and fall 2023 and spring 2024.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks has announced the students named to the deans' and chancellor's lists for the fall 2023 semester. The lists recognize students' outstanding academic achievements. Students receiving a 3.9 grade point average or higher are placed on the chancellor's list, while those receiving a grade point average of between 3.5 and 3.89 are named to the deans' list. UAF is a Land, Sea and Space Grant institution and is the leading doctoral degree-granting institution in the state of Alaska. Since it was founded in 1917, UAF has been internationally recognized for research relating to the Arctic and sub-Arctic in areas such as biology, geophysics, engineering, natural resources and global climate change.

University of Alaska Fairbanks graduate student Kit Cunningham has been selected for the 2024 Sea Grant Knauss Marine Policy Fellowship program, one of the most prestigious marine policy fellowships in the country. Cunningham was chosen after being nominated for the position by Alaska Sea Grant.

UAF undergraduates receive URSA Climate Change Project Awards

Two University of Alaska Fairbanks undergraduate students have been selected to receive 2023-24 Climate Change Project Awards from the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholarly Activity. Logan Niemann, a fisheries and fire science major, received the award for his project entitled "Microplastics in Stomach Contents and Tissues of Subsistence Harvested Bowhead Whales." Jessie Skalisky, wildlife biology and conservation major, was selected for her project, "Invasive Plant Seedbank Development after Wildfire in Alaska's Boreal Forest."

The University of Alaska Fairbanks honored the Class of 2023 during its 101st commencement ceremony on May 6 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks. The university's first commencement took place in 1923 when the sole graduate, John Sexton Shanly, received a bachelor's degree in agriculture. A new paper published in Science Advances synthesizes the impact of metal and coal mines on salmon and trout in northwestern North America. The paper's lead author is Chris Sergeant, a graduate student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences and a research scientist at the University of Montana.

Cate Whiting nominated for NCAA Woman of the Year award

Cate Whiting, a recent graduate and former member of the Alaska Nanooks volleyball team, was named the Alaska Nanooks' selection for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year Award. She was one of four nominated by Great Northwest Athletic Conference schools. A total of 577 graduating student-athletes were nominated, including 127 from other Division II member schools.
